Margaret June Standish Carey November 28, 1926 - May 15, 2009. Margaret June Standish Carey, 82, of Halsey, died Friday at Samaritan Albany General Hospital. Margaret was born in Albany to John and Helen (Collins) Standish. She grew up in Oregon and Montana, graduating from Halsey High School. Margaret attended Cascade College and Multnomah College between the years 1945 - 1949 in Portland. She worked at the Corvallis Gazette Times from 1940 - 1950. On September 2, 1949 Margaret married Robert E. Carey in Halsey. From 1950 until 2009 she lived on the family farm in Halsey. She ws a past president of the Linn County Historical Society (1984-88) and served on the board of the Linn County Museum Advisory Commission for several years, sometimes as chair of the board. Margaret was a member, organist, and vocalist at the Halsey United Methodist Church, a founding member of Oregon Women for Agriculture, a member of the Oregon california Trail association, and was involved with the preservation of Brownsville's Moyer House. Margaret worked as a co-publisher and editor of Calapooia Publications, as well as an author and amateur historian. Her writing collaborator for 23 years was her good friend Patricia Hainline with whom she wrote books about the history of Halsey, Brownsville, Shedd and Sweet Home. They also published a historic newletter, Northwest Passages and wrote a column on local history for the Brownsville Times. Margaret is survived by her husband, Robert Carey of Halsey; children, William Carey and Elizabeth "Beth" Lawson; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Carried; half-brother, Larry Sullivan; and half-sister, Sally. She was preceded in death by both of her parents; and her sister, Patricia Irby. Viewing will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Home. Viewing at the Halsey United Methodist Church will be available Friday from 12:30 to 1:30. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Friday at the Halsey United Methodist Church. A graveside service will follow at Workman Cemetery in Harrisburg. Mildred Irene Kreger, Sept. 24, 1912 -- March 2, 2006. Mildred I. Kreger, 93, died Thursday at St. Anthony's hospital in Pendleton. She was born in Corvallis to Paul and Anita (Heins) Schmidt. She ws the 10th child in a family of 12 children. She was confirmed in 1928 at Zion Lutheran Church in Corvallis and graduated from Salem High School in 1930. Mildred met Herbert Kreger at a "Walther League" meeting at church, and three years later, on March 21, 1931, when she was 18, they married. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1981. Herbert died in 1986. Herbert and Mildred were married for 55 years. "Millie," as she was known to her friends, lived in Cloverdale, Jefferson, Stayton and Salem until 1988, when she moved to Pendleton. Mildred worked in the mint and berry fields; did seasonal cannery work; work on fur farms breeding mink, and later as a clerk in a grocery store. During the war time in 1941, she drove a taxi cab from Corvallis to Portland and all the towns in between. Her pleasures were square dancing and crocheting, especially doilies. Mildred had been crocheting since she was 8 years old, when her mother taught her. She also enjoyed working in greenhouses growing and selling geraniums, and dahlias the size of dinner plates. She belonged to the Dorcas Circle and enjoyed her quilting every week. She was a huge Blazer fan. She will also be remembered for her German determination. She is survived by daughters Norene Brown of Portland and Aileen Wright of Pendleton; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Bishop Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, at Peace Lutheran Church in Pendleton. Memorial contributions may be made to Peace Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund or the Lutheran Hour. Bishop Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.1

     In Benton Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, John appeared on the 1900 U.S. census taken on 15 June 1900. He was listed as John Ropers, born Sept 1860, in Germany, naturalized, age 39, married for 13 years, occupation farmer. Others in the household were his wife Dora, father-in-law John Oesteich, mother-in-law Dora Oestreich, and niece Hannah Oestreich.1
     John and Dorothy appeared on the 1910 U.S. census taken on 15 April 1910 in Woodward Township, Woodward County, Oklahoma. He was shown as John Ropers, age 50, married for 24 years, born in Germany, immigrated in 1882, naturalized, occupation farmer on a general farm. She was shown as Dora T. Ropers, wife, age 44, born in Germany, married for 24 years with no children. Others in the household were Dora's father John Oestreich, and a 15 year old Minnie listed as daughter. However her parents birthplaces were listed as Ohio, so it is unclear how she is related to the family.2
     On 12 January 1920 John and Dorothy appeared on the 1920 U.S. census taken in Monitor Precinct, Marion County, Oregon. He was enumerated as John Ropers, age 59, born in Germany, immgrated in 1886 and naturalized in 1892. He lived on an owned farm and his occupation as farmer on a general farm was crossed out and changed to none. She was listed as Dorothy Ropers, wife, age 53, born in Germany, with Micklenburg being first written, but was crossed out. It gave her immigration date as 1884 and naturalization as 1892. They lived next door to the Albert Falk household.3
     John died on 15 December 1921 in Marion County, Oregon, at age 61.4

She was a lifetime resident of this area and graduated from Eugene University High in 1947. A homemaker, Falk enjoyed gardening, playing organ, pets, cooking, spending time with her family and participating in church groups. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Eugene and also attended Central Lutheran Church in Eugene. She lived in Junction City since 1949. Survivors include her daughter, Susan Rodakowski, of Eugene; two sons, Robert and Richard, both of Junction City; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Tuesday's service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Central Lutheran Church in Eugene. Private burial will follow at Rest Lawn Cemetery in Junction City. Murphy-Musgrove Funeral Home in Junction City is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Music Ministry of Central Lutheran Church or Greenhill Humane Society.1

     Odey died on 20 January 1989 in Kossuth County, Iowa, at age 79.2,3 He was buried at Riverview Cemetery, Algona, Kossuth County, Iowa.3

     John Arthur Ward was born on 17 April 1927 in Kossuth County, Iowa.1 He was the son of Walter James Ward and Mary Mildred Dyer.1
     He married Rita Rasmasen.1
     He married Rosa Ehlert in Alden, Hardin County, Iowa, on 1 October 1950.1
     John died on 7 May 1989 in Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa, at age 62.1
     An obituary for John Arthur Ward was published in The Corwith Herald, Corwith, Iowa on 17 May 1989. It read:
Funeral service for John A. Ward, 62, of Swea City, was held in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Swea City at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 1989. Burial was made in the church cemetery, in Swea City. John A. Ward was born near Wesley, Iowa in Kossuth County on April 17, 1927. He graduated from Corwith High School in 1946 and attended Iowa State University at Ames where he earned his dfairy Herd Improvement Association certification. John was married to Rosa F. Ehlert at Alden, Iowa on October 1, 1950. The couple farmed near Alden where John also worked for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. In 1957, he quit farming and began to work full time for the DHIA, first in the state of Virginia, then in Illinois. The Wards moved to Swea City in 1964. John became area supervisor with the DHIA and retired in 1987. He died Sunday, May 7, 1989 in the University Hospitals at Iowa City. Mr. Ward is survived by his wife, Rosa; a son, Jimmy Ward, who is stationed with the navy in Hawaii and a daughter, Marie, Mrs. Edward Damran, Alliance, NE. Also survivin are his mother, Rosa [sis] Ward of Humboldt; a brother, Walt Ward Jr., Fort Worth, Texas; and four sisters, June, Mrs. Gordon Oswald, Brownsdale, Minn; Mary, Mrs. Gene Black, Norman, Oklahoma; Laura, Mrs. John Seiler, Humboldt and Sylvie, Mrs. Leonard Larson of Badger. His father, Walter J. Ward is deceased.2
