An obituary for Robert Everett Carey was published in the Democrat Herald [online], Albany, Oregon on 22 July 2009. It read:
Robert E. "Bob" Carey, 83, of Halsey passed away July 7 at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center due to complications of heart disease and pneumonia. He was born the son of Everett and Rosa (Seefeld) Carey at the family farm on Lake Creek Drive. He grew up, farmed, raised a family and lived most of his 59 years of married life within a half mile of his parents' farm. After graduating from Halsey High School in 1944, Bob served in the Naval Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific as a tail gunner in a PB4Y-1 Liberator with the VB/VPB 116 "Blue Raiders." After the war, he finished flight school in Pensacola, Fla, earning his wings and the rank of ensign. He qualified in various aircraft and completed seven carrier landings. After his honorable discharge, Bob taught flying in Sweet Home in his own Cessna 120. He also flew it to Anchorage, Alaska, to check out job opportunities as a bush pilot. He married Margaret Standish on Sept. 3, 1949, in Halsey Methodist Church. Bob then attended Oregon State University for a year until his father's injury led him and Margaret back to Halsey to help run the farm. In 1951, they bought the farm next to his parents, where they lived the rest of their lives. Bob farmed in partnership with his father until the late 1960s, when he began working as an agent for Farm Bureau Insurance. He continued to be a serious aviator much of his life and would fly in his Mooney Mark 20A for both business and pleasure. He was a lifelong member of the Halsey United Methodist Church, where he was a trustee, and also taught Sunday School, was a past president of Linn County Farm Bureau, where he and Margaret were named Outstanding Farm Family in 1963; spent many years as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 90; was a former chair of the Central Linn School Board; and was a former board member of Sharing Hands. He was also active with Linn County Republicans, the Association of Naval Aviation, the Isaak Walton League and the American Legion. Bob also loved to hunt, fish and tour aircraft museums. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, who died May 15 this year; his parents; and sister Margaret Wildermuth. Survivors include his chldren, William R. Carey and Elizabeth Carey Lawson; and grandchildren Jonathan Alley and Carrie Lawson. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Halsey United Methodist Church. A catered potluck and remembrance time will begin at 5 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Local folks are urged to bring only a picnic salad and a favorite story about Bob. Memorial contributions to the Halsey United Methodist Church or the Travis Moothart American Legion Post 1846 may be sent in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 Washington St. S.W., Albany, OR 97321.3
