PROMINENT FARMER KILLED BY TRAIN NEAR S.P. DEPOT ON EAST 9TH STREET. Austin Bond of Pirtle Struck By S. P. Train and Death Results Instantly; Car Not Badly Damaged. INQUEST TO BE HELD. Was Native of Linn County and Highly Respected Man--Funeral to Be Friday Afternoon. Austin Bond, well known Linn county farmer, was instantly killed Wednesday evening on east Ninth street near the S. P. Station when he was ground under the wheels of southbound train No. 17 at 5:10 p.m. Mr. Bond had delivered a can of cream to the Albany Creamery Association and was on his way in his Dodge car to the C. O. Budlong Grocery where he was to pick up some goods and then go to the Hamilton Store where Mrs. Bond was waiting for him. W. H. Bedford, of the Russ House, who saw the accident, states that from where he was standing a block away it seemed that Mr. Bond drove onto the track and stopped. It is evident that when he saw the approaching train he became frightened and confused and killed his engine. The engineer is said to have seen him drive onto the right-of-way, slowed down but evidently throught Mr. Bond would go on across. Auto Not Wrecked. The automobile was hit amidships and pushed to the right of the track, being carried 70 feet and turned completely around before being released by the engine. Mr. Bond was either thrown out when the train struck his car or was attempting to jump for his body was carried but a few feet from where the accident occurred. The train was brought to a stop within two cars length from the place of contact. The side curtains of the car were up, which might have hindered Mr. Bond's view of the track to the right. The right side of the car was damaged to some extent, the rear wheel torn off and the running board bent up. The windshield was also broken. Coroner Everett C. Fisher took charge of the body and an inquest will be held at 5 o'clock this evening. Was Native Son. Mr. Bond was 56 years old and retired from his large ranch near Halsey in favor of his son. He was a member of the First Baptist church of this city. The funeral will be held from the Baptist church Friday at 2 o'clock and burial will take place in Riverside cemetery. Dr. G. H. Young will preach the sermon. Mr. Bond was born on the farm of his father, Solomon Bond, adjoining the town of Halsey. He had lived in Linn county all his life, residing up to last fall on his ranch at Twin Buttes, between Halsey and Brownsville. Last fall Mr. and Mrs. Bond purchased the Thresher place at Pirtle and have since lived there.2
He was buried on 21 February 1919 in Riverside Cemetery, Albany, Linn County, Oregon.13,14 Another obituary for Austin Bond was published in the Weekly Gazette Times, Corvallis, Oregon on 27 February 1919. An obituary for James Monroe Bond was published in The Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, Washington, D.C. on 21 May 1914. It read:
BOND--James Monroe Bond, a native of Iowa, died at Healdsburg, Cal., March 22, 1914, at the age of 66 years, 4 months, and 5 days. When he was five years old, his parents crossed the plains to the wilds of Oregon with an ox team. There the child grew to manhood, married, and then moved to central California, where he spent a number of years in farming. During that time he felt that he was called to minister to the sick. Hence, after completing a nurses' course and spending some time in treatment-room work, he entered a San Francisco medical college, from which he was graduated in 1893. He practiced medicine in California until 1906, when, with his son, he opened a sanit arium at Phoenix, Ariz. Dr. Bond continued his practice there until 1911, when he took up the work of chaplain and associate physician in the Healdsburg (Cal.) Medical Home. There he zealously devoted himself to gospel medical work and more than a score of patients embraced present truth through his ministry. His wife and nine children survive. All his children are engaged in denominational work. Elders Frank and Walter Bond being missionaried in Spain. GEORGE W. RINE.16
