An obituary for Elizabeth Davis was published in the Oregon State Journal, Eugene, Oregon on 29 June 1872. It read:
DIED. Mrs. Elizabeth Davis, wife of Nelson Davis, died June 25th, 1872, aged 42 years, 4 months and 5 days. The deceased, sister of the writer, was born in Vermilion county, State of Illinois. She with her parents moved from Illinois to Mahaska county, Iowa, where she was united in marriage to Mr. Nelson Davis, in the year 1846, and in the year 1853 they emigrated to Lane county, Oregon, where she lived till her death. On the 6th day of May, 1866, she was baptized into the followship of the first Baptist Church of Eugene city. Her disease was ulceration of the stomach and dropsy of the chest and bowels. Her disease was long and painful. During her illness she often spoke of her faith in Christ as her Savior. The burthen of her prayer was for patience to wait till the time of her departure. She was a devout Christian, a kind wife and a good mother. She has left a husband and a large family of children, and many other friends, to mourn her loss, but we should not mourn as those without hope. Our loss is her gain. G. W. BOND. Oregonian and Christian Advocate please copy.8

An obituary for Nelson Davis was published in the Colfax Gazette, Colfax, Washington on 13 March 1914. It read:
TRUE-HEARTED OLD PIONEER CALLED TO HIS REWARD. Nelson Davis Came to Whitman County 42 Years Ago---Lived Busy Useful Life. After 42 years of residence in Whitman county Nelson Davis, age 88 years, died March 7 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. J. Torrance at Dayton where he had been visiting for a few weeks. When he passed away a long and noble life on this earth came to an end. Funeral services were held at the Colfax Baptist church Monday 1:30 o'clock, Rev. F. D. Brown, pastor of the church and Rev. Geo. Newman officiating. Nelson Davis was born in Claiborne county, East Tennessee, July 28, 1826. In 1834, when eight years old he moved with his father to Illinois where he resided until 1837, when he moved to Iowa. While living in Iowa he was married to Elizabeth Bond, who died June 25th, 1872. In 1849, he went to California but the next year, in the spring of 1850, returned to Iowa by water. In 1853 he again came to the far West and settled in Lane county, Oregon where he resided until 1872, when he came to Whitman county, then Stevens county, Washington. In 1874 he married Sarah M. Steward who died April 4th, 1899. Mr. Davis came to Whitman county about 42 years ago and was among the first settlers. The farm on which he lived so many years, about three miles north of Colfax, is still known to the old settlers by his name. As he himself said, nearly all his life was spent as a pioneer, having twice crossed the plains and living nearly all his days in a new country. He said that he never saw a railroad until he was 45 years old. He had been a member of a Baptist church since he was 18 years old, that is for nearly 70 years. For many years he was a deacon of the church in Colfax and was known by many as "Deacon Davis." He had been a member of the Republican party since its organization; was interested in all that pertained to public welfare and every ready to help in any moral reform. In his immediate family he is survived by nine children: John Davis, Union, Idaho; Mrs. H. J. Torrence, Dayton, Wash; George Davis, Sunnyside, Wash; Mrs. George Cooper, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; E. B. Davis, Harrison, Idaho; Mrs. Amos Bustin[sic], Mansfield, Wash; Harmon Davis, Cheny, Wash; Mrs. W. E. Slate, Colfax, Wash., children by his first marriage; and Margaret Davis, of Spokane, a daughter of his second marriage; all of whom, except Mrs. Gustin, were able to be present at the funeral services. In addition the following relatives were in attendance at the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Torrance of Dayton; Mr. and Mrs. George Cooper of Coeur d'Alene; Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Powers, and Mr. and Mrs. James Kincaid of Palouse; Mrs. Albert Davis of Pomeroy. Mr. Davis was one man at least, who carried his religion with him across the "plains" and also into all the affairs of his life. He had a great heart which kept his love warm throughout all his years. He loved the companionship of little children. The associations of the home life and the fellowship of his friends were very dear to him. His influence will long remain to bless his family and will be a sweet memory to his many friends. The pallbearers were Herman, Baker, George and John Davis, sons of the deceased, and Roy Slate and Benny Powers, grandsons. The honorary pallbearers were Fred Schreiber, J. A. Perkins, W. E. Lewis, A. W. Mechling, H. L. Plummer and J. W. Cairns.7

In the same year her parents emigrated to Lane county, Oregon, where she lived until her death. In the autumn of 1868 she united with the Baptisst Church at Springfield. She was united in marriage to Mr. Wm. Tucker May 28, 1871, and died December 4, 1871. From the time of her conversion she lived an exemplary Christian life until death. She had been in poor health for some time, when she took cold and died within four days. But amidsst sorrow there is a mingling of joy--she died in the triumph of a living faith. Just before her death she called her friends and relatives around her bed, and exhorted them to meet her in Heaven, then bid them farewell, after which she sang in a clear and distinct voice the following verses:
I'm not ashamed to own my Lord, Or to defend his cause--Maintain the honor of his word, The glory of his cross.
Jesus, my GOd, I know his name, His name is all my trust, Nor will he put my soul to shame Nor let my hope be lost.
After which, with a smiling countenance, she fell asleep in the arms of Jesus. G.W.B.2
