JOHN W. SMALLEY DEAD. Passed Away at Home of Son on Thursday Evening, July 2. John W. Smalley, an aged veteran of the civil war and an early settler of Sherman county, died at the home of his son, L. F. Smalley, living eight miles southeast of Goodland, Thursday evening at about 6:00 o'clock p.m., of herorrhage of the brain, which caused fatal paralysis. This ws the fourth stroke, which proves his remarkable physical constitution. His beloved wife preceded him about six years ago to the spirit world, when the family resided on their home one-half mile east of Goodland, now owned by S. O. Gibbs. Since her death the deceased had resided with his son. There was a very large turnout at the funeral services which were held at the Christian church Saturday afternoon. The W. S. Robinson post and the Women's Relief Corps were in attendance, and the beautiful ritual of the Relief Corps was read in the funeral and burial of the decedent. There was a beautiful and profuse floral display. Appropriate hymns and music was rendered and a large cortege followed his remains to the grave. Rev. Channer preached an appropriate sermon, the text taken was fitting to the occasion, and were the words of Paul, found in II Tim. 4:7: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." He expatiated upon the heroism, patriotism and devotion of the father, in leaving his young wife and little children to fight the battles of the nation and to preserve the integrity of the union. He was among those that answered the call in the words of the song: "We are coming, Father Abraham, three hundred thousand more." There are other members of W. S. Robinson Post in this city who did the same, and one such was a pall bearer on this occasion. Tell these things to your children!

An obituary for Rachel Ann Smalley was published in The Goodland Republic, Goodland, Kansas on 2 August 1907. It read:
MRS. JOHN W. SMALLEY DEAD. End Came Friday Ater Eighteen Months' Sickness. Wife of One of the Pioneers of the County, and Mother of a Large Family. Mrs. Rachel A. Smalley, aged 62 years, wife of John W. Smalley, one of the pioneers of Sherman county, died at the home of her son, Fred, living three miles east of town, last Friday evening. Death was due to paralysis after eighteen months' illness during which time she was bedfast. Mr. Smalley came to Sherman county in the early days of its settlement, and located on a claim a mile east of town where together with his family they have since made their home. The funeral service were held at the Christian church Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and interment was made in the Goodland cemetery. Rev. Stevens read twelve verses from the sixth chapter of Galations, and Rev. Staley, pastor of the church, made the prayer, using beautiful and very appropriate language for the occasion. The choir sang. "When the Roll is called Up Yonder.""I'll Be There," "Rock of Ages," "Shall We Gather at the River," Savior, Hear My Humble Cry." Rev. Stevens preached from the texts precious to the deceased, and indicating strongly her Christian character and her sublime faith in Jesus; Galations 6:2, "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Apostle Paul awaiting martyrdom; II Tim. 4:7 "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course. I have kept the faith." One passage suggested helpfulness, patience, Christlikeness; and the other the triumphant spirit of the martyr, undaunted in facing the "last enemy," with a faith as firm as the "rock of Ages," and exultant, victorious, triumphant in the battle of life.
