With permission from Jan Gillespie
George W Bond was born in January 1818 in Henry County, Kentucky.1,2,3 He was the son of John Bond and Sarah Chastain.1 The exact day of birth has not been determined as various sources list it as the 13th, 20th and the 30th of January, 1818.1,2,3 He was probably one of the three males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, John Bond, in the 1820 U.S. Census of West Port, Henry County, Kentucky.4 He moved to Washington County, Indiana, about 1822 with his parents Sarah and John Bond.5 He moved to Edgar County, Illinois, in 1829 with his parents John and Sarah Bond.5 He was probably one of the two males age 10 to 14 listed in the household of his father, John Bond, in the 1830 U.S. Census of Edgar County, Illinois.6
He married Elizabeth Stillwell, daughter of William Stillwell and Selia Bond, in Edgar County, Illinois, on 1 March 1838.7
George W Bond was enumerated on the U.S. census for 1840 in Jefferson County, Iowa Territory, with a household listed as two males between 20 and 29 (probably George and his brother William), and one female between 15 and 19 (his wife Elizabeth.)8 The Baptist Church of Knoxville, Iowa, was organized in October of 1845. Elder G. W. Bond was one of the first ministers there. As Rev. G. W. Bond, he was elected first pastor and took charge in October 1847. In July of 1851, he and two others were appointed to attend the Des Moines Association to ask for admission to that Association.9
George and Elizabeth appeared on the 1850 U.S. census taken on 16 September 1850 in Marion County, Iowa. He was listed as George W. Bond, age 32, born in Kentucky, occupation preacher, Missionary Bap. She was listed as Elizabeth Bond, age 29, born in Kentucky. Their children William, Benjamin, Sarah, Amanda and James were listed as living with them.10 In 1853 George and Elizabeth moved to Lane County, Oregon Territory, traveling over the Oregon Trail by wagon train. There were a number of other family members in the same train.. Their children William, Benjamin, Sarah, Amanda and James went with them. George kept a day by day account of their trip, using one line per day. He wrote on April 12, "Started to Oregon," then on September 21, "this is the day we got in to the Wilamit valy and makes 5 months and 9 days on the Road."11 On 16 October 1853 George and Elizabeth Bond settled Donation Land Claim Number 1758 filed in Oregon City, in Lane County, Oregon Territory described as portions of Sections 29 and 30 in Township 17 South, Range 3 West, totaling 245.86 acres. This land was located on the north side of the Willamette River across from what is now Skinner Butte Park.12,13,14 A ledger for the Sons of Temperance, Division No. 7, Eugene City, Oregon Territory, lists a number of names between 1856 and 1858 including G. W. Bond.15 On 17 July 1858 Rev. G. W. Bond was voted pastor of the Willamette Forks Baptist Church in Eugene City, Lane County, Oregon Territory. This was for one year at an annual salary of $100. On August 14th of that same year, the church changed its name to First Baptist Church of Eugene City.16,17,18 George W Bond was living in Lane County, Oregon Territory, when Oregon became a state on 14 February 1859.14
On 30 July 1860 George and Elizabeth appeared on the 1860 U.S. census taken in Spencer Precinct, Eugene, Lane County, Oregon. His listing showed his name as G. W. Bond. He was 42, a minister, born in Kentucky, real estate valued at $3000 and personal property at $400. Her listing showed her as Elizabeth Bond, age 38, a housewife born in Kentucky. Their children William, Benjamin, Sarah, Amanda, James, John, Joseph and George were listed as living with them.19 About 1864, while George was minister, the Eugene First Baptist Church joined the Umpqua Baptist Association which advocated "non-fellowship with such churches as continued the advocacy of American slavery." He was one of the early leaders of this group, all strong anti-slavery men.20 The patent for the Donation Land Claim Number Oregon City 1758 located in Lane County, Oregon was issued on 20 April 1866 to George and Elizabeth Bond.21 On 16 May 1868 Rev G. W. Bond resigned as the pastor of the First Baptist Church at Eugene. He had served for almost ten years. It was during that time that the church built a new building at the corner of Eighth and Pearl, completed in 1867.22,23,24
In Springfield Township, Lane County, Oregon, on 30 June 1870 George and Elizabeth appeared on the 1870 U.S. census. He was listed as Geo W Bond, a 52 year old married preacher, born in Kentucky, with real estate valued at $4000 and personal property at $425. She was shown as Elizabeth Bond, age 48, born in Kentucky.. Their children Sarah, Amanda, James, John, Joseph, George, Mary and Charles were listed as living with them.25
George died on 9 January 1880 in Lane County, Oregon. According to the Mortality Schedule of 1880, he died of heart disease.1,26 He was buried on 11 January 1880 in Pioneer Cemetery, Eugene, Lane County, Oregon. The Pioneer Cemetery was also known as the IOOF Cemetery.27,28 His grave marker inscription reads: REV. GEORGE W. BOND. JAN 30, 1818 - JAN 9, 1880.28
An obituary for George W Bond was published in the Eugene City Guard, Eugene, Oregon on 17 January 1880. It read:
DIED--Elder G. W. Bond died at his residence, near this city, Friday evening, January 9th. He was buried from the Baptist Church, the funeral sermon being preached by Elder J. C. Richardson, assisted by the pastors of the other churches. elder Bond was a man of spotless character, and unquestioned integrity. By his virtues he commanded the respect of all. The deceased was 62 years of age.29

Another obituary for George W Bond was published in the State Journal, Eugene City, Lane County, Oregon, on 17 January 1880. It read:
IN MEMORIUM. Elder G. W. Bond died at his home near Eugene, Friday January 9th, at 11 o'clock, p.m. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church on Sunday last at one o'clock; the sermon by Elder J. C. Richardson, assisted in the service by the pastor of the city. From the Church the body was taken to the Odd Fellow's Cemetery and interred. Elder Bond was an old citizen of our State and county. He settled on the place where he died, about twenty-five years ago, and lived there until his death. He was born in Kentucky, January 20th, 1818; he moved to Iowa, where he lived for a number of years, when he immigrated to Oregon and settled as above mentioned. During the time of his residence here, he has lived an irreproachable life, bore a high reputation for strict integrity of character and honorable dealing. Lane county has had no more honorable citizen nor one more favorably known or more highly esteemed in the wide circle of his acquaintance. In his death the community has been bereft of a member who might well be a model of integrity for the rising generation. As a christian he was honored and beloved by his brethren and respected by the entire community. His religion was something more than a profession of his life; it was a fact in his whole life. He walked "worthy of the vocation wherewith he was called," and was honored in his religious profession because his life agreed with it. As a preacher he was of seperior [sic] ability. Without the advantage of education in the beginning of his ministry, he struggled against difficulties and surmounted them, rising by his own efforts and against great disadvantage to eminence. His denomination has lost an able champion, and the whole religious community suffered the loss of "a good minister of Jesus Christ." His physician was constant and faithful in his attendance, but the disease was beyond his reach. He died of disease of the heart and during his sickness suffered much, but he bore it all with fortitude and christian resignation, and exemplified the fact the the gospel which he had preached to others was abundantly able to sustain him in the hour of death. He passed away peacefully and triumphantly. Verily, "blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." His memory will be embalmed in many hearts as a rich legacy illustrating the beauty of the Christians life and the triumphant christians death. A FRIEND.2

At the second annual reunion of the Bond Family held 21 August 1938 at Turner, Marion County, Oregon, Harvey Bond, who was the president of the reunion, gave an address giving some of the history about the family. Harvey was one of Solomon's son and gave a tribute to his Uncle George.30
