An obituary for Sarah Ann Rieblin was published in the Halsey Enterprise, Halsey, Oregon on 15 November 1923. It read:
A WELL EARNED REST. After 79 years of good works, Mrs. W. J. Ribelin died Saturday afternoon at her home, where she had been suffering for thirty-seven days, since her breakdown, and having laid unconscious for three days. Mrs. Ribelin had been a resident of Linn county since her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Finley, came from Illinoise in 1846 and took a donation claim at Crawfordsville. Her first husband, Mr. Vawter, died, and in 1866 she married Whipple Hayes of Halsey. Ten years later Mr. Hayes was murdered in cold blood by a man to whom he had sold a town lot with a promise that no intoxicants should be sold upon it and whom he charged with violating that agreement. That the murderer paid the law's penalty on the gallows was but poor compensation for the crime. About a dozen years later she married W. J. Ribelin and the pair have passed the period of time usually counted as a generation among mankind in happy harmony. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the M. E. church of which she had been a lifelong member, Rev. Robert Parker officiating, and interment was at the Smith cemetery. Her venerable husband survives her as do four sisters and three brothers, a remarkable instance of longevity in a family, Mrs. Eliza Brandon of this city is a sister, as are Mrs. Lizzie Crawford and Mrs. Nancy Bell of Idaho and Mrs. Edna Henry of Prosser, Wash. Two of the brothers were Alexander Finley of California, who with his wife had been at the Ribelin home for some time; George Finley of Portland, who was at the funeral, and William Finley of Hermiston. Mrs. Gertie Pentland of California is a daughter and Frank Hayes of the same state a son of the deceased.7

DIED. Benjamin Carroll Windom was born in Sancamon county, Illinois, March 10, 1832, and died at his home in Brownsville, Oregon, July 5, 1907, aged 75 years, 3 months and 19 days. Deceased came to Oregon in 1853, crossing the plain with ox team, and settled in Portland, where he married Miss Sybel A. Hayes, who is now his bereaved widow. Four children were the fruits of this union, vis: Alonzo C., Hanna E., Mary J. and Lydia M.--one son and three daughters. Two have passed to the beyond--Mary J. and Lydia M. Alonzo C. Windom, of Brownsville, and Hannah, now Mrs. Finley, of Eastern Oregon, remain to mourn the loss of an affectionate father and comfort the aged mother. Brother Windom was converted and united with the M. E. church when about 19 years old, and was deeply interested in the church and her prosperity. He has lived here for many years and needs no eulogy from me. I visited him often during the few months I have been in Brownsville, and talked to him about his prospects of the other world, and he always said: "The Lord's will be done. I trust I am ready when He comes." He was a great sufferer for many years--but his suffering is ended, and he had gone to meet his Judge. We trust he has heard the "Well done, enter thou into My rest." Let us watch and be ready, for we know not when the Son of Man cometh. T. L. Jones. The funeral was hel Sunday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock, from the M.E. church of this city, Rev. T. L. Jones conducting the services. Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery, the remains being followed to their last resting place by a large number of the friends and neighbors of deceased.7,2

During her last affliction, when the writer visited her, she expressed herself as peaceful and happy, her faith in God strong, and her prospects for heaven bright. Her death was very sudden and unexpected, yet she has left a good testimony behind her, that she has gone to the better land. As a wife she was kind, as a mother affectionate and tender, and as a neighbor and Christian much beloved. We commend the bereaved family to the prayers and sympathy of God's children. N. A.      An obituary for Henry Wesley Slaight was published in the Clarinda Herald Journal, Clarinda, Iowa on 23 June 1969. It read:
Wesley Slaight, 72, killed from blast in farm workshop. MASON TOWNSHIP--Wesley Slaight, 72, was killed in an explosion at his home east of New Market Friday morning while welding in his shop. Funeral services were held this Monday at the Hamilton Memorial Missionary Church in Bedford with burial at Memory Cemetery at New Market. The accident happened about 9 a.m. as Mr Slaight apparently began to weld in his shop. Taylor County Sheriff Leonard Ratliff reports that a spark from the welding apparently fell in a buck of potash and sugar under the work bench which had been used on the farm. The explosion knocked out the south side of the garage-shop and shattered the walk-in door, Sheriff Ratliff says. Debris was found 200 feet south of the garage. Pieces of shrapnel from a scoop shovel nearby were thrown through the north side and roof. A hole six inches deep and about a foot in diameter was blown in the dirt floor where the bucket had been sitting. Persons up to two miles from the farm home reported hearing the blast. Mr. Slaight was killed instantly from the concussion. The Slaights had lived on the farm on the south side of Highway 2 for more than 25 years and had been in this area for 47 years. Mr. Slaight was born at Paola, Kan, the family moving to Canada when he was young. He served in the Canadian Army during World War I. He was married to Beulah Tally on March 8, 1921. They have three children, Ralph of Council Bluffs, Harold of Lincoln and Elvin of Elkhart, Ind, and six grandchildren. Active pallbearers were Earl Wininger, Conner Tally, Herbert Tally, Melvin Tally, Jay Cunningham and Marshall Derry. Honorary bearers were James Pickrel, Albert Fickness, Nick Reavis, Harve Thompson, Herman O'Dell, Colburn Payne, Dewey Ferguson, Robert Hamilton.3
