EASTERN MULTNOMAH LOSES AGED PIONEER. The community was greatly shocked this morning to learn of the death, at an early hour, of William Harrison Bond, who has been a resident of eastern Multnomah for a half century or more. His friends knew that Mr. Bond was in somewhat feeble health, but none knew that any unfavorable condition had arisen and it was not thought necessary to send for his daughter, Mrs. Elsie Harris, whose home is in Portland, until yesterday. Medical attention was summoned yesterday and it was thought that he was suffering from indigestion. Mrs. Harris cared for her father during the night and about seven o'clock this morning told Mrs. Bond that he seemed to be breathing unnaturally. Mrs. Bond went to his room and found him resting, as she supposed. A little later she found him in the same position and then discovered that he had passed quietly away. Besides his widow, Mr. Bond is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Harris and a son, Sergeant Jewell Bond of the United States Regular Army, stationed at Alcatres,[sic] California. The funeral arrangements will not be announced until word is received from Sergeant Bond.12

Mrs. Bond died in 1886 at the family home in Powell Valley. Mr. Bond married in 1889, Mrs. H. S. Forbes, of Damascus. The farm on which the family lived was located about four miles east of Gresham and was originally taken up by Mr. Bond's grandfather, John Bond. In 1904 the farm was sold and Mr. and Mrs. Bond removed to Gresham where they have since resided. Mr. Bond died Tuesday morning, October 9th. He is survived by his wife, son Jewel and daughter Elsie B. Harris. The family lived there until after his and Amanda's deaths. A book written in 1986 describes the home: The Harlow house has a beautiful setting. Many choice trees and shrubs encircle the property to make a charming background for the home. Flowering locusts planted along the road nearby were brought as seedlings to the area from Kansas for the specifric purpose of planting them around the pioneer home...The house is of all-wood construction and has two stories. Boxed 2-inch by 10-inch plank walls covered by siding and put together with hand-forged nails are features of this early Lane dwelling. Originally there were 11 rooms which were: living room, parlor, kitchen with large adjacent pantry, a sitting room and two bedrooms (one of the latter being the master with an old red-brick fireplace and next to this a bathroom with a large galvanized tub).
