     He married Kathlene Hughs on 13 July 1888.1
     In State Line Township, Sherman County, Kansas, Hurley and Kathlene appeared on the 1900 U.S. census taken on 13 June 1900. Their children Henry, Clarence, Joseph, Harry, Susie, Lottie and Alice were listed as living with them.2
     Hurley and Kathlene appeared on the 1910 U.S. census taken on 30 April 1910 in Grant Township, Sherman County, Kansas. He was enumerated as Herley E. Pettibone, a farmer, age 49, born in Illinois, married for 22 years. She was listed as Kate N. Pettibone, wife, age 41, born in Illinois, mother of 11 children, 10 living. Their children Clarence, Joseph, Harry, Susie, Lottie, Alice, Effie, Walter and Lucy were listed as living with them.3
     On 13 January 1920 Hurley and Kathlene appeared on the 1920 U.S. census taken in Grant Township, Sherman County, Kansas. He was listed as Hurbert E. Pettibone, farmer on general farm, age 60, born in Illinois. She was shown as Catherine Pettibone, wife, age 50, born in Illinois. Their children Joseph, Susie, Walter and Effie were listed as living with them.4
     Hurley died on 1 August 1929 in Goodland, Sherman County, Kansas, at age 69.1 He was buried on 5 August 1929 in Kanorado Cemetery, State Line Township, Sherman County, Kansas.1,5 His grave marker inscription reads: HURLEY E. PETTIBONE. 1859-1929.5
     An obituary for Hurley Pettibone was published in The Goodland News-Republic, Goodland, Kansas on 7 August 1929. It read:
H.E. PETTIBONE DIED IN GOODLAND, AUGUST 1. Kanorado Pioneer Dead. Hulburt Edward Pettibone was born October 1, 1859, at Warren, Ill., and departed this life at Goodland, Kans., August 1, 1929, near midnight. He came to Kansas in 1886 and homesteaded near Jaqua, Kans. He was united in marriage to Kathlene Hughs July 13, 1888. To this union ten children were born, five boys and five girls, Lucy and Lottie having preceded him to the great beyond. He leaves to mourn his departure a devoted wife, five sons, Henry, Clarnece, Joe, Harry and Walter, all of Kanorado; three daughters, Mrs. See of Colby; Mrs. Effie Callaway, fo Flint, Mich; and Mrs. Alice Slaight, of Goodland; four brothers, seventeen grandchildren, many other relatives, and friends. Having been a pioneer of this country his acquaintance reached far. The funeral was held Monday at 2:30 p.m. from the Christian church at Kanorado. Interment was in the Kanorado, C. W. Gregory, of Goodland, officiating.1

Lottie was the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Pettibone and grew to womanhood at the farm home four miles north of Kanorado. Several years ago she became the wife of Elmer Seward and they have since made their home in Kanorado. Her friends were numbered by her acquaintances. The young husband and infant daughter, Betty Jo, have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in this their of deepest sorrow. Besides her husband and baby she leaves to mourn her early departure, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Pettibone, five brothers, three sisters, other relatives and a host of friends.3

LUCY A. PETTIBONE. The death angel visited the H. E. Pettibone home 4 1/2 miles north of Kanorado Tuesday evening, July 11, [sic] 1916 at eleven o'clock and took from it their loving daughter and affectionate sister, Lucy. She had been suffering for two weeks with an attact of the measles and in her extreme patience she grew weaker and weaker, unable to get relief from medical treatment; everything was done that loving hands could do but nothing could stay the approaching hand of death. Lucy A. Pettibone was born in Sherman County Kansas, August 24, 1907; she leaves a father, mother four sisters and five brothers to share in the sorrow her death brings. The funeral services were conducted from the home Tues July 4. Rev Vancleave preaching the funeral sermon. The body was quietly laid to rest in the Kanorado cemetery where it will remain until the resurrection morn. The sympathy of the entire community goes to the bereaved father, mother, sisters and brothers; they can only trust and go to the source of comfort for that which furnished balm to sorrowed and broken hearts.1
