He appeared on the 1940 U.S. census taken on 18 April 1940 in Dead Lake Township, Otter Tail County, Minnesota, in the household of his parents Julia and Martin S Swanson. He was enumerated as Marvin Swanson, age 35, born in Iowa, occupation operator of creamery.4 A local history of Otter Tail County published in 1977 included the following about Marvin: Marvin grew up on the family farm, and graduated from Perham high school. His father passed away in June 1941, and from then, Marvin and later his wife, Mary helped to care for Julia who died in Nov. 1958, having spenty the last few years with them in their home in Fergus Falls, where Mary worked as a nurse. Marvin in [sic] had taken over the Farmer's Co-op Creamery in Richville, after it closed as such, and owned and operated it from 1935 to 1945. He had learned the trade of butter maker, but now explored a new area. The farmers sold the whole milk, which he separated the cream and made it into butter. He then processed the skim milk into casein and whey. The casein was shipped elsewhere to be used in manufacturing various products, while the whey was used with grain by the local farmers as a feed for hogs. However, the need for two sets of cans, one for the whole millk, the other for the whey made it an undesirable venture for some farmers. The larger creameries, located at Perham, Dent and Ottertail, begtan to take up most of the business in the area and he closed the creamery in 1945. The balance of his working years were spent in the employment of the Great Northern Railway until both he and hisd wife Mary retired. They have one son, Wally.6
Marvin died on 23 November 1989 at age 85.1 He was buried at Richville Cemetery, Rush Lake Township, Otter Tail County, Minnesota.1,7
