DOUBLE TRAGEDY AT MARSHFIELD Both Victims Were Residents of Eugene Several Years Ago. J. A. Armitage Kills Mrs. J. O. Stoops, With Whom He was infatuated, and then Ends His own Life---Was Under Peace Bonds for Threatening Woman. Marshfield, Ore. Oct 17. This community was horrified this afternoon by the most henious crime ever committed within its limits. J. A. Armitage, with a rifle and revolver gained admittance to the home of J. A. Stoops, and shot and killed Mrs. Stoops who had seen his approach and with her children had taken refuge in the second story of her house. Armitage afterwards committed suicide. Armitage secured entrance to Stoop's residence by breaking a window through which he crawled. As he ascended the sairs [sic], Mrs. Stoops, whose life he had previously threatened was at the head of stairs and called for him to halt. Armitage continued to ascend and Mrs. Stoops opened fire on him, one shot inflicting a scalp wound on Armitage. Armitage dropped his rifle and drew a pistol. Reaching Mrs. Stoops he siezed [sic] her with one hand and shot her through the breast. She fell dead. The murderer, though bleeding profusely, made his exit as he came, leaving a train of blood which marked the way to his home, where he shot and killed himself. The Armitage and Stoops family have been acquainted several years. They came here about the same time from Eugene, Oregon. Armitage had become enamored of Mrs. Stoops, the infatuation bordering on insanity. A few weeks ago he was bound over in the sum of $800 to keep the peace after threatening the woman's life. Mrs. Stoops left a husband and five children, the eldest of whom is a girl aged 13, and who witnessed the shooting and endeavored to save her mother by belaboring the murderer over the head with the rifle which he had dropped. Armitage has a wife and grown family at Eugene.8
