Smalley, 1885 settler of the county was taken to that eternal in the skies which is not builded by hands. L. F. Smalley, who for the past sixty-one years has made his home in Sherman county, died at his home at 531 W. 10th street in Goodland, Wednesday at twelve-thirty noon. Mr. and Mrs. Smalley featured quite pominently in the news in December of 1944, when they celebrated their sixty-fourth wedding anniversary. Lafe F. Smalley was born in Adams county, Ohio, September, 21, 1858 and passed away at his home in Goodland, Kansas, January 30, 1946, at the age of eighty-seven years. He was united in marriage to Rosa Ella Shipman, at Tabias [sic], Nebraska, December 29, 1880. They moved to Sherman county from Saline county, Nebraska in 1885 and filed a homestead claim eight miles southeast of Goodland. There they built a home and made their abode for thirty-four years, moving to Goodland in 1920, and have made their home here since that time. The above photo of Mr. and Mrs. Smalley was taken in December of 1944 when they enjoyed the happy privilege of celbrting their 64th wedding anniversary together. He was a member of the Friends church and lived a devout Christian life, giving of his time and strength to those who were in need of it, always a loving husband father and a good neighbor. In 1920 they moved to Goodland, where they operated a grocery store, with their son Marvin. During the early years in Sherman County, Rosa taught school, and was much in demand to care for the ill. Lafe helped install some of the first telphones, connecting neightbors thru the use of barbed wire fences as lines. Rosa went to high school (almost unheard of at that time) and received her teacher's certificate at the age or 16. They school terms were for 3 months. When they first arrived in Sherman County, Lafe always whistled when he came home after dark, so that Rosa would know that it was NOT Indians Approaching! He hauled freight from Wallace, until the railroads came. Ralph, Lake, Celia and Julia all taught school, in Sherman County.27

She was born Rosa Ella Shipman, on November 29, 1863 at Galesburg, Ill. She was married to Lafe Ed Smalley, and to this union six [sic] children were born--Lacie [sic] Albertson of Eugene, Ore; Lade [sic] A. Elliott, Bornsville [sic], Ore; Celia L. Pettibone, Kanorado; Marvin Smalley, Albany, Ore; Julia Everett, Goodland and L. W. (Spike) Smalley of Albany, Ore. Mrs. Smalley and her family homesteaded in Goodland in 1885, eight miles south of what is now Goodland. Their homestead was the stopping point on the trail for wagons from Fort Wallace to points in Nebraska. She served as a mid-wife and practical nurse in the early days and always was ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed. In later years she continued in this capacity, and served many families in the community. As a member of the Women's Relief Corps, she served as president several times and was very active in the organization, which did quite a bit of work in the organization of Goodland. She was an active member of the Christian Church her entire life, a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary and also served as county president of the WCTU. In addition to her children, she is survived by twenty grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, five great, great grandchildren, nephews and nieces, three sisters-in-law and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church on Monday afternoon, September 13 at 2 o'clock with the Rev. James Keffer officiating. Interment was in the family plot at the Goodland cemetery. The Lester F. Sage Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.25
A granddaughter, Leah Drake wrote the following about Lafe and Rosa: In 1886, Lafe & Rosa homesteaded 8 miles southeast of Goodland, across the road south of the timber claim, which was their home later (the place where Dautel lives.) In 1920 they moved to Goodland, where they operated a grocery store, with their son Marvin. Ralph, Lake, Celia and Julia all taught school, in Sherman County.27Children of Rosa Ella Shipman and Lafayette Pierce Smalley

At County Road in North Harrisburg Precinct, Linn County, Oregon, she appeared on the 1930 U.S. census taken on 14 April 1930 in the household of her parents Julius and Florence Edna Falk. She was listed as Lois V. Falk, daughter, age 15, born in Oregon, and had attended school.6
A newspaper article tells about when their home burned: Loses Valuable Home by Fire. The large frame house of Julius Falk burned Thursday afternoon. Most of the furniture in the lower story was saved. A large crowd gathered, but could do nothing to stop the fire. It is said to have started in the upper story of the building but nobody knows how unless it be from the flue. Mr. Falk had carried insurance on it for years but lately had let the policy lapse. The fire was discovered about 4 o'clock when a daughter, Violet, went upstairs to rest, as she was not feeling well. She saw the fire in the attic and gave the alarm. Mr. Falk was gone at the time. Arrangements are under way to replace the house. It was built 19 years ago. Another clipping states Card of Thanks. We wish to thank those who were so kind and thoughful during the loss of our house. Words cannot express our gratitude to everyone who helped in removing the contents during the fire, and we wish to especially thank all who had contributed to our home since. Julius Falk and family.7
She married Benjamin Lotspeich at house of E. E. Carey in Halsey, Linn County, Oregon, on 9 October 1934.8 The Marriage Certificate showed that they were married by Gilbert R. Carey, a minister. Their witnesses were Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Carey.8 A newspaper article was printed on 11 October 1934 in the Harrisburg Bulletin, Harrisburg, Oregon about the marriage of Lois Verl Falk and Benjamin Lotspeich. It read: YES, THEY GOT MARRIED. Lois Falk and Benjamin W. Lotspiech wanted to get married. Not having had a great deal of experience in this line, they naturally supposed that all one had to do was to go to the preacher and tell him to do his stuff. SO far, this was ok; but when they went to the preacher's (Gilbert Carey) house, they found him gone. Inquiry developed that he was working on his brother's farm running a tractor. Upon presenting their case, he left his tractor long enough to come into the house, marry them, and go back to work. The young couple left on a motorcycle the same day for Texas, the home of the groom, where they will live. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Falk.9 Lois Verl Lotspeich and Benjamin Lotspeich were divorced between 1940 and 1945.10 Lois Verl Lotspeich was named as an heir in the will of Florence Edna Falk, After her mother's death in 1979.11

Julius Falk and family.6 She graduated from high school at Junction City Union High School, Junction City, Lane County, Oregon, on 9 June 1938.7

- Aunt of Joanne Gayle Albertson
Violet Margaret Falk was born on 11 March 1924 in Harrisburg, Linn County, Oregon.1 She was the daughter of Julius Adolph Falk and Florence Edna Bond.2
At County Road in North Harrisburg Precinct, Linn County, Oregon, she appeared on the 1930 U.S. census taken on 14 April 1930 in the household of her parents Julius and Florence Edna Falk. She was listed as Violet M. Falk, daughter, age 6, born in Oregon.3
Julius Falk and family.4 A newspaper article was printed on 24 December 1935 in the Democrat-Herald, Albany, Oregon naming Violet. It read: Busey School Gives Program Friday Night....."The First Christmas Night," recitation, by Violet Falk.5
