An obituary for Lydia C. Ellis was published in the Newberg Graphic, Newberg, Oregon on 9 November 1922. It read:
OBITUARY OF LYDIA H. ELLIS Lydia Caroline, daughter of Francis and Rebecca Larr Hockett, was born in Lee county, Iowa, five miles south of Salem, April 7, 1853. She departed this life at her home in Newberg, Oregon, on November 4, 1922, at the age of 69 years, 6 months and 27 days. She was converted when she was about 15 years old under the ministry of James Owen, a minister in the Friends church. She was a birth right, and life long member of the Society of Friends. She was a very devout Christian, showing forth the character of her Lord and Master. She was always concerned about the salvation of those about her, and greatly interested in the spriitual welfare of the church. For nearly twenty years she has been greatly afflicated and all through the latter years of her suffering she was an example of patience and christian fortitude. She was conscious until the last, and calmly faced death, talking freely of her departure, and advising with her family with regard to her funeral arrangements. As she faced death it was clear to those about her that the thought of death had been robbed of its sting, and with the Apostle, Paul, she calmly anticipated her departure with joy and gladness. Only a short time before she went to be with her Lord and Master she exclaimed--'O, Bless the Lord O my soul.' In the active years of her life's work and service, she gave much of her time and energy for the comfort and ehlp of others. She rode long distances in the early pioneer days of Kansas ministering with marked success to the sick, giving her service and medicine almost without any kind of remuneration, except the love and gratitude of the needly people whom she served. On the 4th day of June, 1870, she was united in marriage to Zimri S. Ellis at New Providence, Iowa. To this union were born ten children, seven sons and three daughters, all of whom are living except their son, CHarles, who in the early years of his young manhood responded ot the call to 'Come up higher.' The open hearted hospitality of the Ellis home is shown in the fact that for longer of shorted periods of time they had in their home seven other children besides their own who received the impress of christian training. And the success of this training was evidenced by the conversion of not only their own children but all of the others except one, who was in their home only about six months. All the rest grew up in the christian faith. She leaves to mourn their loss her husband, Zimri, and six sons, Albert of Salem, Oregon; Solomon of Liberal, Kansas; Francis C. of Ontario, Oregon, Ralph of Hugoton, Kansas; Roy V. of Haviland, Kansas; and Abel of Liberal, Kansas; three daughters, Dora Webster of New Mexico, Esther Farmer of Idaho, and Martha Iona Hutzen of Newberg, Oregon: one sister, Debora Blair of Hubbard, Iowa; one brother, Gideon Hockett of Optama, Oklahoma; 26 grandchildren and two great-grand-children. A good neighbor, a good mother and wife and faithful follower of Jesus has gone from us to her rich reward. She did what she could.5
